The Treasure Trail to Speisekammer
The Treasure Trail to Speisekammer
Ride Code: 30-2-B
Meet at 9:30 am
Roll out at 9:45 am
You’ve lived in SF all this time and haven’t ridden to Treasure Island. Well, here is how you can rectify that oversight. We’re riding to Treasure Island to take in San Francisco’s latest neighborhood, almost-Superfund site and all, by riding the Alex Zuckerman path across the Bay Bridge. This dedicated multi-use path is the only way to bike half-way to SF on our very own Bridge to nearly Nowhere. Be ready for spectacular views, the deafening roar of death machines in the adjacent roadway, a potentially character-building headwind as we head west (and monstrous tailwind when we return), . It’s almost flat except for the gentle ascent up the span and the ugly but short climb up Yerba Buena on the return.
But there’s more! We’ll do a quick tour of the Port of Oakland, which by bike you should only do on Sundays when the Port is closed and the big rigs disappear. Hidden in the port are a couple of small but pretty parks, escapes from industry, and then we’ll wend over to Alameda for a delicious lunch at Speisekammer, an excellent German restaurant. With Oktoberfest being long over the crowd will be smaller and they’ll have their (better) regular menu. And of course they have German beer. After lunch it’s a short hop back to West Oakland and 12th Street BART stations where you can catch a ride back to your San Francisco neighborhood.
Please RSVP.
Rain cancels.
Bring a lock for lunch at Speisekammer. (They have a bike rack visible from the outdoor patio.)
