General Membership Meeting

About this event

The current leadership in the club is getting long in the tooth. David has been President for five years and before that was Ride Coordinator and Secretary. Tony has been Ride Coordinator for six years and before that was the ChainLetter editor for four. Roger has been Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and now Webmaster over a period of about ten years. I am stepping down at the end of this year. Tony would like to step down and go back to being “retired”. (He had been ChainLetter editor and secretary also back in the ‘80s.) It's no secret that we haven't had anyone volunteer to be Events Coordinator for many years, nor have we had members fill the Outreach positions on the board.

Having a static board is bad for the club. Leaders get tired, burned out, moribund in vision, just ‘going through the motions.’ New leaders bring new energy, perhaps a different vision or direction, and a different take on how to get things done.

If you love the club and believe in it and want it to continue, we will need new blood to step up to lead the club in 2024. If we do not have a full board — President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer — then the club will have to fold in its current form since we no longer will be a legally sanctioned club. If you think this is unlikely, consider that the club almost folded in 2001 after a lull in which no one stepped up to join the board and volunteer to lead rides. The board planned to dissolve the club and become a subgroup of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. But when put to a vote the members decisively said to continue the club and a select group of volunteers, roused by the prospect of the club’s demise, stepped up and made a huge push that resulted in an influx of new members, new rides and events, and a reinvigorated club. We are hoping that can happen again without a crisis!

Although the club election isn’t until next January, now is the time to start planning the future of the club. Do you want it to continue? If so, we need more volunteers especially to take a leadership role on the board. If you sit there and do nothing, then that will be the result: nothing. Please consider becoming a club officer for the sake of the club’s future. To ensure a smooth transition in 2024 now is the time to step forward.

To entice you a bit, Sports Basement has offered us a discount for shopping there after the meeting (they close at 6). Details to be announced.
