Our Topic This Year
How good bike infrastructure gets done in San Francisco, why it often doesn't, and what you can do to help

San Francisco should be the best biking city in the US. We've got great weather, a few excellent bikeways, and a fairly level route around every hill. But we still lack a coherent network and lag behind not only European capitals, but also North American cities like Montreal, Vancouver and Mexico City. Why is it so difficult to get good infrastructure built here?

Jeffrey TumlinOur Speaker
Jeffrey Tumlin led the SFMTA during one of its most challenging times, including drastic cuts to agency operating and capital budgets. He was able to build about 30 miles of Slow Streets and significantly expand protected bikeways, but was not able to achieve all he hoped. Join us to hear from Jeff about the unique politics of San Francisco that help and hurt our ability to build great infrastructure. He'll cover JFK Promenade, Lake Slow Street and Valencia Street, highlighting how politics and friendly fire nearly tanked all three, but how strategic coordination got them where we are today, with lessons for how to build even better in the future.
