We'll be exploring East Bay Hills where everything is bigger in personality and flavor. Just north of Lafayette we will take a short but the steepest climb of the day on Reliez Valley Road. Then it's off to Franklin Canyon Road and McEwen Road, with an eventual 15% descent to Carquinez Scenic Drive. Think of Carquinez Scenic Drive as our version of Paradise Drive, but for adults with strong legs. You get bay views on the left and might even hear the Capitol Corridor AMTRAK zooming down below. We'll also be on the lookout for California Newts which move across roads and trails to their breeding habitats. In Martinez we'll either do coffee at States Coffee or have lunch at Luigi's, depending on the mood. Yes, you can eat at Luigi's! The return will take Alhambra Avenue and Taylor Blvd, which hitches up 8% as it merges with and becomes Pleasant Hill Road.
As always, bring sunscreen, water, and a snack, along with your helmet, and an extra tube and tire changing kit.
