The AIDS Bike-A-Thon ran from 1985 to 1994. For this month's 40th Anniversary ride we are revisiting a close facsimile of the 25-mile route option. Why 'facsimile'? Because the exact route seems to be lost to history. No route sheet or map can be found and the original spray-on route markers have long vanished from the streets. But we know the general form of the route and can recall some of the streets. The 100-mile route to Guerneville was replaced with a loop ride up into Marin and back. In addition the BAT planners thought to add a 60- and a 25-mile routes to encourage more participants and hence raise more money. The 60 was a shorter loop into Marin and the 25 was a flat city loop through the west side.
We start in the Castro as did the original and head to Golden Gate Park and up to the Presidio before turning south to the Great Highway and then around Lake Merced. We return back to Golden Gate Park and to the Castro.
Remember to bring water and a snack. Helmets are required to be worn on all club rides.
We meet at "Hibernia Beach" aka the Bank of America at 18th & Castro.
Meet at 10 AM with a 10:30 departure.
This ride is a no-drop ride.
